Writing Contest Rules

  1. Utah students, grades 4-12 are eligible.
  2. There is no entry fee.
  3. All rights are retained by the student.
  4. Work must relate to speculative themes. Speculative themes include science fiction, horror, and fantasy.
  5. Work must meet school district guidelines for appropriateness.
  6. All work must be original.
  7. Works relating to copyrighted, trademarked, or registered properties like Star TrekTM or Star WarsTM cannot be accepted.
  8. Categories include
    • Poetry
    • Short short story up to 800 words
    • Short story up to 3000 words
    • Essay
  9. Manuscripts must be typed or printed in black ink, double spaced, and single sided on 8 1/2 by 11 inch white paper. Title and word count must be on the first page; title and page number must be on each additional page.
    Do NOT send bound material! We cannot guarantee that it will get back to you in one piece, and we cannot use it to make copies for the readers and judges.
  10. The author's name should only appear on a separate sheet, along with the work's title. On this page must also be the student's address, the school's name and address, the student's grade level, and a statement by the student's teacher or guardian that the work is original by the student and may be considered in the contest. (Note that the official entry form requests all of this information.)
  11. Personal information may not appear anywhere on the manuscript as entries will be distributed anonymously to readers and judges.
  12. Only work that has not won a previous RFF Utah Writing and Art Contest is eligible.
  13. Students may send the same work of fiction to any other CONduit writing contests.
  14. Illustrated poems will be considered as art and should follow the art contest guidelines.

  16. If you want the manuscript returned after the contest, be sure to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Make sure the postage is sufficient!
  17. Entries must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2006.
  18. No electronic submissions will be accepted.
  19. RFF Utah reserves the right to make changes to the rules to meet the needs of the contest.
